Michelle Obama, 57, former First Lady of the USA gave us all a masterclass in colour blocking at Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony. Wowing us all in a beautiful plum Sergio Hudson outfit while in Washington.
Michelle wore a long claret-coloured coat to keep warm against the chill. Although, it won’t have kept her warm as Bernie Sanders, now famous, inauguration mittens would have! In a slightly darker hue was a high-necked, tight-fitting top. This was tucked into high-waisted, wide-legged claret trousers. Adding a dash of vibrancy to the outfit was her gorgeous belt. Finally, it is has the past years must have accessory – a face mask!
Now, we haven’t searched the prices to see if we can afford to get our hands on this exact outfit, but our guesses are it will be out of our budget! Instead, we are here to show you some patterns and fabric examples for the two main pieces. Starting with the show stopping coat!
There are so many great coat patterns available from a quick search. For the purpose of this blog we are going to mention the ‘Rumana Coat’ by, ‘By Hand London’. This style is a timeless classic that will never go out of fashion.
The Rumana Coat is fully lined and features flattering princess seams throughout. It has stunning pockets, two-piece sleeves and an elegant collar and lapel. It is guaranteed to be a satisfying sew, which will push the boundaries of your sewing skills, and leave you with an impressive garment you will be proud to show off for years of chilly days to come.
For the fabric, we found this stunning & soft, plum wool melton fabric from clothspot.co.uk!
(Pattern size from UK 6 / US 2 up to UK 24 / US 20)
Finally, moving on to those gorgeous wide legged trousers!
Michelle Obamas 2021 inauguration outfit features high waist trousers that don’t have any visible fastenings from the front. Pictured is the trouser version of the ‘Jenny overalls’ from Closet Core patterns. If you are looking for more volume this pattern could be easily adapted. To get a similar look to Michelle Obamas pair, you will want fabric that flows great.
For example, this bio washed linen would not only look great but would feel great on and provide great shape.
